South Africa unveils $26bn coronavirus relief plan

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday announced a $26 billion relief package aimed at supporting the economy and the vulnerable during the coronavirus pandemic.


In a special address to the nation, Ramaphosa announced “a massive social and economic support package of 500 billion rand ($26.3 billion), which amounts to about 10 percent of our GDP.”

“The scale of this emergency programme is historical,” he said.

UK appoints Minister for loneliness to battle isolation, dementia & high blood pressure

British Prime Minister, Theresa May has appointed a minister for loneliness to honour the legacy of the murdered Labour MP Jo Cox and tackle the isolation felt by some people in the UK. According to Reuters, Sports minister Tracey Crouch will take on the new role, in addition to her existing job, and develop a strategy to address the problem, wh ich research has linked with dementia, early mortality and high blood pressure. The Jo Cox Loneliness Commission was set up to tackle one of the issues the late MP who was murdered in 2016 cared most passionately about and recommended that the Government make a minister responsible for a national strategy to combat loneliness. “For far too many people, loneliness is the sad reality of modern life. 12 coronavirus. Free state in Nigeria

Kayode Oyero Twelve states have not recorded any case of the coronavirus disease in Nigeria, The PUNCH reports. This is as the novel virus spreads to 25 states in the country including the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control as of Tuesday night, 782 confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in the country while 197 recoveries and 25 fatalities have been recorded.
